The office of the Dean of students in conjunction with the counseling department (Academics) conducts training for student peer counselors. This is done annually, for you to be considered you need to possess the following Characteristics:
- Good interpersonal skills
- Congruent
- Empathic
- Confidentiality- Be able to uphold oath of secrecy
- Unconditional positive regard for peer
Peer counselors are meant to enhance counseling services by assisting University counselors by providing support and encouragement to fellow students.
Peer counselors establishment was guided by studies review that students are more likely to share their problems with a fellow student than with a parent or their lectures. Their mingling with the others makes it easy for the peer counselors to identify potential counseling cases.
